Comment:
Second night of the UK tour and a good gig all
round.
I haven't seen the Scorpions live since 1980, so wondered what the
show would be like. To be honest, it wasn't much different from back
then, except we are all a bit older and perhaps wiser. They still
put on a good show and play to the crowd. There is never any doubt
that this band appreciate their fans. Klaus threw dozens of
drumsticks into the crowd any time he was playing his (needs more)
cowbell, and the guys were chucking guitar picks all over. I was
nearly trampled by the rush to pick 'em all up. :-)
I am a bit disappointed that they didn't play more from the new
album, but I believe there might have been an online poll for the
band to base the set upon. It was a bit of a disappointment that
they didn't play any pre-Lovedrive songs, which they might have done
if Uli Jon Roth had joined them on stage, as promised. I think he
was jet-lagged from his flight back from the US that day (fair
enough). However, Michael Schenker did join them mid-set for three
Lovedrive songs and then again during the encore. I have heard
various comment about Michael and the quality of his playing that
night, both good and bad, but I was just happy to see him standing
next to his brother and Matthias riffing away on his flying V.
The recording:
Not the best I have recorded. Although I was stack taping, the
overpowering bass was ridiculous, especially from the kick drum. I
don't know if this is typical of the Scorpions or not, but was
really bad. Therefore I needed to EQ this a little to remove the
worst of the booming bass.
There are a couple of moments when two drunks got in my way to shout
nonsense into the mics. As the mics were hidden, you have to accept
that steamers can just sense tapers. There is also the odd bit of
phasing when someone gets in my way. It was a metal gig, after all!
There's a little bit of talking, but not too much, as I was near the
front. Plenty of crowd participation (shouting, singing, clapping),
but not too much chat to detract from the music.
